Raising Lazarus

“Lazarus, come out.” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” John 11:43-44

In this icon, Jesus is calls Lazarus out from the tomb, raising him from death. The apostles stand behind Jesus on the left. In the center are the Pharisees and other onlookers. This miracle was performed before bystanders so that they might believe. (John 11:42) Lazarus’ sisters, Mary and Martha, are at Jesus’ feet. Mary’s hands are covered as she touches Jesus’ feet. One figure covers his nose while unbinding Lazarus, and one is removing the cover of the tomb. In the background are Mount Horeb, which rises from Jesus’ feet, and the wall of the town of Bethany.
