Holy Prophet Elijah

“[A] great and strong wind tore the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.” 1 Kings 19:11-12

It was the prophet Elijah to whom God spoke in the still, small voice. He is depicted here in warm, muted colors reminiscent of the desert where Elijah had this encounter with God and where God sustained him for 40 days. Elijah holds a scroll, the symbol of a prophet, and a staff, representing leadership. Being a desert wanderer, his hair and beard are unkempt. The trim on Elijah’s cloak suggests water, pointing to John the Baptist for whom Elijah was a precursor. As an ascetic, Elijah has a plain halo rather than one embellished with decoration.
